As soon as the old detective starts talking about buying a boat and all the fish he’s going to catch, or what the view will be like from his back window when he retires, you pretty much know he’s not gonna make it. Or maybe he will, but not without taking a bullet in the gut first just to psych you out. It’s not because he’s not a good guy – in fact he’s often the most genuinely decent, likeable character. It’s because life isn’t fair, and bad guys are only clearly bad if they hurt good people. Al Feldstein has died. Feldstein got his start at EC Comics, creating Tales From The Crypt and several other titles, and later became editor for MAD Magazine. The Comics Journal, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Time Magazine and Robot 6 have obituaries. NPR’s All Things Considered remembers Feldstein. At The Atlantic Wire, Eric Levinson considers, “How Al Feldstein Helped Shape Modern Comedy.” The Comics Journal has posted a 2013 interview with Feldstein and a 2013 overview of his career by Bob Levin. Here Feldstein talks about being called before the 1954 Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency and Comic Books for Sequential Art’s documentary, Diagrams for Delinquents.
