The Cultural Gutter

geek chic with mad technique

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." -- Oscar Wilde

RIP, Dwayne McDuffie

Enhanced by Zemanta

Animation and comics creator Dwayne McDuffie has died. Among his many accomplishments was the founding of Milestone Media, the animated Justice League, the Ben 10 animated series and most recently the animated All-Star Superman. Comics Alliance has more. And Pop Culture Shock remembers him. (If you are interested, Carol recently wrote an article about him).

Soundtracks for Your Awesomeness

Let J.G. Thirlwell’s Venture Bros. soundtrack bore into your skull until your every mundane mouse tap is explosions, necromancy and two-way wrist radios.  Make your life more brutal than you’ve ever imagined with Dethklok.

Stick to the Man in his Regions!

The Man got you down? Too focused on his “Regions?” Won’t let you watch US content outside the US? Saving your searches? Well, I’m not recommending anything. Just saying Hotspot Shield might’ve done some good and it might help you watch some fine programming here and here.  And don’t forget here.

Detroit Metal City: No Music, No Dream

We live in a time of film adaptations of comic books massive and tiny, from Iron Man and The Dark Knight to Wanted and The Surrogates. But I don’t need to see any more. I have seen Detroit Metal City and it is a testament to awesomeness.

In the Sewer with the Alligators

Hey everybody, let

I’m tired of the two-camera, hour-long drama. I’m tired of the Oscar-oriented mainstream film. I’m tired of “literary fiction,” you know, respectable middlebrow art. I don’t enjoy everyday reality heightened with swelling strings. I’m tired of realism’s conventions; so I’ve been turning to comics, pulp fiction, cartoons and genre film.

At Vern Reviews The Films Of Cinema, Outlaw Vern offers “one Seagalologist’s perspective on the ‘vulgar auteurism’ debate”: “The practitioners are trying to bring recognition to artists who they think are marginalized, but they’re accidentally creating a ranking of ‘vulgar auteur’ beneath ‘actual auteur.’ And that also shines a spotlight on the idea’s most glaring weakness: even the most establishment of the critical establishment have always worshipped directors who were at some point considered lowbrow–Hitchcock, Fuller, Peckinpah, DePalma.”
